Instagram Reel Not Downloading? Every Cause and How to Fix It
Published 3 min read
You pasted a Reel link, waited, and got an error or a file that isn't what you expected. Almost every failure comes down to one of a handful of causes, and most take seconds to fix. Work through them in order: the first three explain the large majority of problems.
1. The account is private
This is the most common cause by far. Reels from private accounts are only shown to followers the owner has approved, so they are not reachable through a public link. No honest downloader can get them, and any tool that asks for your Instagram password to "unlock" private videos is one to avoid.
How to check: open the link in a private or incognito browser window without logging in to Instagram. If you are asked to log in, or the video won't play, the Reel isn't public.
2. The link isn't a post
Instagram links look alike, but not all of them point to a post. A link to someone's profile (instagram.com/username), their Stories or a Highlight has nothing the tool can save. You will see a message saying nothing was found to download.
Fix: open the Reel or post itself, tap Share, then Copy link. A Reel link contains /reel/ followed by a code; video and photo posts use /p/ and older IGTV videos use /tv/, and all of them work. Photos, on their own or in a carousel, download as full-size JPG files.
3. The Reel was deleted or archived
If the creator deleted or archived the Reel, the link stops working for everyone, including downloaders. The same goes for posts removed by Instagram or restricted in your country.
Fix: check that the Reel still opens in the app. If it doesn't, there is nothing left to save.
4. Instagram is limiting requests
Instagram sometimes slows down or blocks requests for a short time, especially when many people download at once. You may see a message that the platform is limiting downloads, or that it isn't responding.
Fix: wait a minute and paste the link again. This is temporary and usually clears quickly. Pasting the same link over and over in a few seconds makes it worse, not better.
5. The link was copied incompletely
Links copied by hand, from a screenshot or from a message preview can lose characters, which makes them point nowhere. Some messaging apps also wrap links in their own redirect addresses.
Fix: always copy from Instagram's own Share sheet. If you received the link in a chat, open it in Instagram first, then share and copy from there.
6. The video downloaded, but it has no sound
Some Reels are posted silently, and Instagram sometimes delivers picture and sound as separate files. When the sound is separate, the result shows a Download Audio button alongside the video; tap it to save the sound as an M4A file. Our guide to Reel audio explains why it isn't MP3.
7. You can't find the file on your phone
The download worked, but the video isn't in your Gallery or Photos. On iPhone, Safari saves to the Files app first: tap the downloads arrow, open the video, tap Share and choose Save Video. See the iPhone guide. On Android, look in the Downloads folder of your Files app; the Android guide has the details.
8. The file is too large or too long
Very long videos can exceed the size the tool will handle. Reels are short, so this is rare, but long IGTV videos can hit it.
Fix: there is no workaround for the limit itself. For your own long videos, keep the original file from your editing app.
Still stuck?
Try the link once more in our Instagram video downloader after a few minutes. If a public Reel keeps failing, use the Report this link button on the error card: it sends us the link so we can check what changed on Instagram's side.
