How to Download Audio from Instagram Reels (M4A, Not Fake MP3)
Published 3 min read
Sometimes you don't want the video at all, just the voiceover, a song clip or a sound you want to hear again. You can save the audio from many public Reels on its own, without screen recording and without a converter app. This guide explains how, and it is honest about the one thing most "Reels to MP3" sites gloss over.
What "downloading Reel audio" really means
Instagram often stores a Reel's picture and its sound as two separate streams and joins them when you press play. When it does, that sound stream can be saved as a file by itself. Nothing is recorded from your speaker and nothing is converted: you get the same audio data Instagram's own player uses.
When a Reel is delivered as a single combined file, there is no separate sound track to save. In that case the sound comes with the video, and the video download is the way to keep it.
Step 1: Copy the Reel link
In the Instagram app, open the Reel, tap Share and then Copy link. On a computer, copy the address from your browser; it looks like instagram.com/reel/ followed by a code. Only Reels from public accounts work.
Step 2: Paste it into the audio downloader
Open our audio downloader and paste the link. It works the same as the video tool, but it goes straight for the sound: after the preview loads, tap Download Audio. You can also use the Instagram video downloader; when a separate track exists, the Download Audio button appears there too, next to the video.
The file saves to your usual Downloads folder. On iPhone, Safari puts it in the Files app, where you can open it or share it to another app.
Why you get M4A, not MP3
The file is usually an M4A (sometimes WebM). That is the format Instagram itself uses for the sound, and we hand it over untouched. Plenty of sites promise "Reels to MP3 at 320kbps", but a converter can't add quality that was never in the original: it can only re-encode the same sound into a bigger file, often losing a little along the way.
M4A plays in every modern music and video app on iPhone, Android, Windows and Mac. If a program insists on MP3, a free desktop converter can change it, but for listening you don't need to.
Why some Reels show no audio option
If the result only offers the video, Instagram served that Reel as one combined file. There is nothing wrong with the link and nothing we can split out. Download the video instead: the sound is inside it, and most video players and editors let you export the audio from there.
A few Reels are also posted without any sound. If the video preview is silent, the audio download will be too.
Using Reel audio in your own content
Saving a sound to listen to later is one thing. Reusing it is another. Music in Reels is usually licensed to Instagram for use inside the app, not to you, so putting that track into a video on another platform can get the upload muted or taken down. Voiceovers and original sounds belong to the creator who made them.
If you want to reuse a sound in your own Reel, the cleaner route is Instagram's own Use audio button, which keeps the credit attached. For anything outside Instagram, ask the creator or use royalty-free music.
Audio from other platforms
The same audio downloader works with YouTube videos and Shorts, and with the other supported platforms whenever they provide a separate sound track. The rules are the same everywhere: public posts only, original format, no conversion.
Quick answers
Is it free? Yes, with no account and no app to install.
Can I get audio from a private account? No. Private Reels are only visible to approved followers, and we never ask for your login.
Is the quality better than the video's sound? No, it is the same sound, just saved on its own. That's the point.
