Reddit Videos With No Sound: Why It Happens and How to Fix It

You save a Reddit video, press play and hear nothing. The picture is fine, the file is not broken, and yet the sound is gone. This is one of the most common surprises with Reddit clips, and it has a technical cause. This guide explains why it happens, how to check whether a post really has sound and what you can do about it.
Why the sound goes missing
Videos hosted on Reddit itself, at addresses that start with v.redd.it, are commonly stored as two separate files: one for the picture and one for the audio. The Reddit app and website play them together. But if a tool or a browser saves only the video stream, you get a silent clip.
This is not unique to Reddit, and it is not a sign that anything is wrong with your device. It is just how the video is delivered.
First, check that the post has sound at all
Many Reddit videos are silent to begin with. GIF-style clips, screen captures and some short loops carry no audio track. Before you look for a fault, open the post in the app and check:
- Is the volume icon present? A crossed-out or missing speaker often means the video has no audio.
- Turn the sound on. Reddit videos often start muted, so tap the speaker.
- Try another post. If other videos play with sound, your setup is fine.
If the original has no sound, no saved copy will either.
Hosted on Reddit, or elsewhere?
Look at where the video comes from. A post can show a video from v.redd.it (hosted by Reddit), a link to YouTube or another site or an embedded clip from a different service. Each behaves differently:
- Reddit-hosted: separate audio and video streams, which is the usual reason for silent saves.
- YouTube or another site: save it from that site with the matching tool, for example our YouTube video downloader.
- Image and GIF posts: these are not videos with sound at all.
How to get a copy with sound
Try these steps in order:
- Try again in a minute. A short delay or a busy moment can affect what a tool can fetch.
- Use the original post link. Copy the link from the post's Share menu, not from a comment or a redirect.
- Try the short link. Both full Reddit links and short redd.it links are accepted by our Reddit video downloader.
- Watch for a warning. When a tool can only offer a video without sound, it should tell you so instead of pretending. That message is the signal to try a different approach.
- Play the file in another player. Some phone gallery apps mute unusual files. Open it in a full media player to be sure.
If the source has separate streams and you need both
If you have the right to use the video, you can combine the video and audio yourself in a video editor. That is more work than most people want for a single clip, so try the steps above first. If the clip is yours, the better answer is to keep the original file you uploaded.
